Jonathan Sandler, 30 years old, Toulouse, France.
Jonathan was murdered by gunfire with two of his children, 6-year-old Aryeh and 3.5-year-old Gabriel, next to the Jewish school where he taught.
Jonathan, originally from the Kiryat Yovel neighborhood of Jerusalem, studied at the kolel in Bayit veGan in the city until 2010. He recently decided to go to Toulouse to strengthen the Jewish community, and worked as a teacher in the community school.
Ava Sandler, who lost her husband and two sons in the attack, is eight months pregnant, and has a 1-year-old girl, said her farewells at a ceremony held at Ozar HaTorah, the school where they were murdered. She told the listeners about her husband: "He came here on a mission to teach for two years, and spent his time between Toulouse and Bordeaux, helping children with learning disabilities to get better acquainted with the Torah. He gave his everything for this important goal."
"I grieve for you, our brother Jonathan, your qualities were most dear to me," Rabbi Yona Metzger, Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi of Israel, eulogized Jonathan Sandler. "The only son of his parents, he made Aliyah in order to learn Torah, and then decided to teach it in Toulouse. What an exemplary person," he continued, breaking into tears.
Jonathan was laid to rest together with his two sons at Giv'at Shaul Cemetery in Jerusalem. He is survived by his pregnant wife and a daughter.
