Weekly Cabinet meeting Tuesday 10.9.2002 |
|
| (10/09/2002) |
At the weekly Cabinet meeting today (Tuesday), 10.9.2002:
1. The Government marked the anniversary of the 11.9.2001 terror attacks
in the US. Prime Minister Ariel Sharon commented:
"Tomorrow, we will mark one year since the 11.9.2001 terror attack on
the US. Thousands of civilians from many countries lost their lives in
the attacks in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania. They were
perpetrated by terrorists who had lived in the US and who used the
freedoms that this great democracy affords its citizens - in order to
attack it. It was an historic warning light to democracies, which are
being called on to defend themselves against those who would assail
them. Our hearts are with the innocent victims' families and with the
American people. I hold US President George Bush in the highest esteem
for the true leadership that he showed in understanding the great
historic challenge facing him.
Israel, which has been engaged in a war against murderous terror since
its independence to this very day, knows that there is no compromise in
the war against terror. Any display of weakness in the battle against
terror is destined to claim a heavy price.
Tomorrow, we will hold a solidarity assembly to mark the anniversary.
We will remember 11.9.2001 as a day on which the dark and dangerous
forces threw down a challenge to the leadership of the free world and
the values of liberty and democracy. The counter-assault of the free
world, led by the US, began that very day.
We believe that this campaign will end in the complete victory of light
over darkness."
2. Defense Minister Binyamin Ben-Eliezer reviewed current security
events and noted that last week was marked by a sign of a certain
increase in terrorist efforts in Gaza, despite the continuing trend of a
decreasing scope of attacks in Judea, Samaria, Gaza and Israel.
Defense Minister Ben-Eliezer further stated that the security forces
were continuing their intensive and successful preventive operations
against attacks this week; dozens of wanted terrorists have been
arrested.
Defense Minister Ben-Eliezer called ministers' attention to internal
processes underway on the Palestinian side.
Defense Minister Ben-Eliezer related to the situation on the northern
border, as well as the possibility of an American attack on Iraq.
OC Intelligence Major-General Aharon Zeevi-Farkash briefed ministers on,
among other things, issues related to the Palestinian Authority.
3. Prime Minister Sharon announced that on 3.9.2002 he appointed
Brigadier-General Danny Arditi as head of the National Security Council
Special Counter-Terrorism Staff.
4. The Cabinet decided to approve Israel's acceding to the OECD
International Investment and Multi-National Corporation Declaration of
12.1.1976.
