At the weekly Cabinet meeting today (Sunday), 29.9.2002:


1. The Cabinet noted Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's announcement that he
has decided to appoint Maj.-Gen. (ret.) Meir Dagan as Director of the
Mossad. The director of the Mossad is appointed by the Prime Minister.
In accordance with a 1999 Cabinet decision, Prime Minister Sharon
requested that the Advisory Committee on Senior Appointments chaired by
retired Judge Gabriel Bach, which was established in pursuance of the
aforementioned Cabinet decision, evaluate the appointment and form an
opinion regarding Dagan's candidacy to head the Mossad. The Committee
decided to issue a positive recommendation regarding Dagan's
appointment.

Prime Minister Sharon thanked outgoing Mossad Director Ephraim Halevy
for his services and for his contributions to the Mossad.

2. Defense Minister Benjamin Ben-Eliezer briefed the Cabinet on ongoing
security matters and added that it is the second anniversary of the
violent confrontation which has been forced on Israel by Palestinian
terror, in which 623 Israelis have been murdered and 4,500 injured.
The Defense Minister noted that we are currently dealing with the fierce
efforts of terrorist organizations to renew the cycle of attacks against
Israel while the security establishment tries to foil and stop them.
The Defense Minister gave details of recent attacks and of attacks that
were thwarted. The Defense Minister noted that the IDF is redeploying
its forces around the Mukata compound, in accordance with the decision
of the group of ministers appointed by the Cabinet this morning.

Prime Minister Ariel Sharon discussed the existing contacts with the US
administration on the situation in the area, Israel's intentions
vis-a-vis Palestinian terror and the situation in the Mukata compound.

3. Communications Minister Reuven Rivlin briefed the Cabinet on his
participation in the International Telecommunication Union
Plenipotentiary Conference in Morocco.
