Weekly Cabinet meeting, Sunday 6.10.02 |
|
| (06/10/2002) |
At the weekly Cabinet meeting Sunday, 6.10.2002:
1. The Cabinet marked one year since Minister Rechavam Zeevy was
murdered by
Palestinian terrorists:
Prime Minister Ariel Sharon made the following remarks:
"Today marks the one-year anniversary of the murder of Minister Rechavam
Zeevy by Palestinian terrorists.
Minister Zeevy was dedicated, from his youth to the day of his death, to
taking an active role in the struggle for the creation of the State of
Israel, and for its continued existence and security, and in this
struggle he fell.
The Jewish nation, in its struggle for its land, reserves great credit
for Minister Zeevy, from his youthful days in the Palmach, through his
long and distinguished service in the IDF and until he became a Member
of the Knesset and a minister.
Known as Gandhi, he had a vast knowledge of the land of Israel and its
history, and unshakingly believed in the Jewish people's right to its
historical homeland. In his public life, Gandhi excelled in struggling
for, and raising awareness and respect for, his positions and beliefs.
Gandhi fell in Jerusalem from terrorist bullets and left a testament of
uncompromising struggle for the security of the State of Israel.
This testament - we will uphold and fulfill.
We begin today, here, next to the Cabinet table where Minister Zeevy sat
with us, with commemorations to mark one year since his death.
May his memory be blessed.
Education Minister Limor Livnat has - in accordance with the decision by
the Ministerial Committee for Symbols and Ceremonies - directed schools
to dedicate one hour to his memory and discussion of the late minister's
actions for the State of Israel.
2. IDF Chief-of-Staff Lt.-Gen. Moshe Yaalon briefed the Cabinet on
current security affairs, especially in relation to Iraq and the
Palestinian sphere; regarding the latter, the Chief-of-Staff discussed
the types of attacks that the Palestinians have been perpetrating of
late, as well as the IDF's countermeasures. The Chief-of-Staff
described the IDF's humanitarian activity in the Palestinian cities
under curfew.
Prime Minister Sharon requested that ministers cease making remarks
about Iraq and said that Israel will know how to defend itself if
attacked.
3. Prime Minister Sharon briefed the Cabinet on his visit to Moscow and
his meetings with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Russian Prime
Minister Mikhail M. Kasyanov and other senior Russian government
officials. Prime Minister Sharon characterized his visit as friendly
and warm.
