Following are Prime Minister Ariel Sharon’s remarks at the start of his meeting with the members of the Sheinan Committee, who presented their report on the war on road accidents:
“Today I am pleased to welcome the members of the Sheinan Committee, who have completed their report on one of the most worrying phenomena in the country – road accidents. I have waited for this report and I am pleased that it has arrived.
The report proposes a broad range of steps that can lead to a genuine improvement on the roads. My government will treat this report with all due seriousness and in 1.5 weeks I and Transportation Minister Meir Shetrit intend to submit it to the Cabinet for discussion.
The killing on the roads claims over 500 victims a year! This figure is very worrying and demands immediate action. I am certain that it is possible to improve the situation on the roads. It is our obligation to change this situation and I believe that this plan will help us do so.
I want to thank Avi Naor and the ‘Green Light’ non-profit association. 1.2 million signatures certainly helped lead to the Sheinan plan. There are very many talented people in the country but it seems to me that Avi is the only one who could amass 1.2 million supporters in three months.”
