Prime Minister Ehud Olmert this morning toured archaeological sites near the Western Wall in the Old City of Jerusalem.  He inspected the excavations opposite the Wall itself, where First and Second Temple period remains have been found, and the area of the Western Wall tunnels, where he was briefed by Israel Antiquities Authority personnel on the reconstruction and preservation of the site, one of the leading tourist attractions in the country.

Prime Minister Olmert said: "Major resources have always been invested in solving the picture of our past.  No power on earth can take these places from us.  The Jewish People and these places are one.  All of our history, all of our memories, all of our prayers and all of our yearnings are here.  All of Jewish history, if it can be summarized into one clear feeling – is the unending yearning of the Jewish People to return home, and we will maintain it."

After visiting the Western Wall, Prime Minister Olmert proceeded to the Mt. Scopus overlook, where he was joined by Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat, who briefed him on development plans for the area.
