(25/12/2002)
Prime Minister Ariel Sharon met today (Wednesday), 25.12.2002, with
representatives of the Movement for Quality Government and said that he
welcomed the important initiative to have general party memberships -
and not party central committees - select their parties' respective
Knesset lists. The Prime Minister also referred to additional steps
that must be taken, such as formulating conditions for candidates'
ability to vote and be elected.

Prime Minister Sharon said that he supported these changes as soon as it
became clear that there were mishaps, some severe in their nature, in
the electoral system and noted that he had immediately turned to Justice
Minister Meir Shetrit and asked him to formulate legislation on having
larger forums - not party central committees - select parties'
respective Knesset lists. The Prime Minister reiterated that he intends
to make every effort to pass such legislation, if possible, before the
28.1.2003 elections.
