On 18.4.04, the Border Police conducted an initiated operation to apprehend
persons who had been throwing Molotov cocktails near Beit Rimon junction in
the lower Galilee. During the operation, a Border Police vehicle was
traveling on Road #77 between Golani junction and Beit Rimon junction when
automatic weapons fire was directed at it from the roadside; the Border
Police personnel returned fire and stormed their assailants.
Two Israeli Arabs - Muhammad Mahmoud Khativ, 21, from Kafr Kana, who was
seriously wounded during the incident and later died of his wounds, and Ala
Ataf Musa, 21, from Kafr Manda, who was wounded in the leg - were
apprehended at the site from which the automatic weapons fire had been
directed.
The two were apprehended along with a short-barreled M-16. Tests showed
that the weapon was that of Corporal Oleg Shaichat who was abducted from the vicinity of Beit Rimon junction on 21.7.03 and murdered. His body was found in an olive grove near Kafr Kana on 28.7.03.
An intensive Israel Police-ISA investigation, in cooperation with the State Prosecutor's Office (Northern District) led to the arrest of Muhammad Khaled Anbatawi, 20, from Kafr Kana, a close friend of Muhammad Khativ. Anbatawi and Musa told investigators that - along with Khativ - they had established their cell in October 2002, with the express goal of - inter alia - murdering an IDF soldier, stealing his weapon and using it to perpetrate further terrorist attacks.
Anbatawi and Musa admitted that the cell attempted to perpetrate several
such kidnappings between 10.02-5.03 in the area between Golani and Hamovil
junctions. On 21.7.03, Khativ and Anbatawi spotted Cpl. Shaichat standing
at Beit Rimon junction, enticed him to enter their vehicle and subsequently
murdered him in a nearby olive grove, where they buried him. Khativ and
Anbatawi stole Cpl. Shaichat's M-16.
The investigation - including the possibility that the cell perpetrated
other terrorist attacks - is continuing.
