Presentation of the Prime Minister's Plan for the development of the Arab Sector
03/07/2000
The Prime Minister's Plan for the development of the Arab sector was presented today to heads of Arab local authorities by the Head of the Coordination & Supervision Department at the Prime Minister's Office, Mr. Be'eri Holtzman, and the Prime Minister's Adviser for Special Programs, Mr. Uzi Gador, in order to receive their input before Government approval of this program.

According to the proposal, the Government will invest approx. $2 billion in the Arab sector over a period of 4 years. The program focuses on the advancement of this sector in the fields of infrastructure, education, employment and entrepreneurship.

The Heads of the authorities welcomed this program as an important signal toward significant practical action for equality in Israeli society. They noted the urgent need for approval of contour plans and their adjustment to meet the needs of the Arab communities, in the third millennium.

The Program encompasses 55 municipal authorities, including 73 communities. It does not cover those mixed communities included in other projects. Approximately 60,000 Arab citizens will be affected by this project, the largest of its scope in the Arab sector.

The Government is expected to approve this program within the next two weeks.
