Prime Minister Ariel Sharon met today (Tuesday), 24.7.2001, in his
Jerusalem office, with European Union High Representative for Common
Foreign and Security Policy Javier Solana.
Throughout the meeting, which was held in a good atmosphere, Prime
Minister Sharon made it clear that the implementation of the Mitchell
report and the Tenet cease-fire document that Israel is obligated to can
only begin after the complete cessation of violence, terrorism and
incitement.
In response to a question on when the countdown for the seven-day
testing period for the cease-fire could begin, Prime Minister Sharon
replied that the countdown will begin only when there is complete quiet.
Prime Minister Sharon emphasized that Israel is united in its determined
position not conduct negotiations under fire and terrorism.
Prime Minister Sharon said that the European Union member countries
could contribute towards a relaxation of the situation and advance the
process if they would exercise unrelenting pressure on Palestinian
Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat to take all measures necessary for a
complete cease-fire.
The issue of observers was not raised.
