Prime Minister Ehud Olmert today visited the Israel Navy.  He was accompanied by Deputy Defense Minister Matan Vilnai, IDF Chief-of-Staff Lt.-Gen. Gaby Ashkenazi and GOC Navy Maj.-Gen. Eli Merom.  The Prime Minister was hosted at Navy bases, toured a submarine, sailed on a missile boat, and visited with naval commandos and observed their exercises.

During the visit, Prime Minister Olmert was briefed on the Navy's various craft, as well as on the technological and operational capabilities of its different units.  He spoke with sailors and commandos and expressed his appreciation for their important service on behalf of the State of Israel.

At the end of his visit, Prime Minister Olmert said: "We have a professional and exemplary navy that has, over the years, become an important arm in the defense of the State of Israel.  Navy fighters combine versatile abilities not only at sea, but on land and in the air.  I am personally familiar with many of the special operations in which the Israel Navy has been involved and I highly esteem its operational capabilities.  I came here today in order to say 'Thank you'."
