Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, Education Minister Yuli Tamir, Cabinet Secretary Oved Yehezkel and Prime Minister’s Office Director-General Ra’anan Dinur met today  with 20 young educators and outstanding education students from various universities and teacher training colleges.  Also in attendance were teachers and educators who were in engaged in various other professions before deciding to take up teaching and education.

Prime Minister Olmert spoke with his guests about the 2008-2009 school year, which opens tomorrow, heard their views on the role and status of the education system in Israel and expressed his great esteem for professionals who decided to teach and educate Israeli youth.  He also referred to the New Horizon reforms, the construction of 8,000 additional classrooms, the Government’s investment in education and programs for toddlers.

The Prime Minister said: “I have visited more than a few schools this year.  While it is true that there are certain weaknesses in the education system, I met people with dedication and abilities, wonderful teachers who care and who are emotionally involved.  It is due to them that we also see great achievements.  Israel is still considered a country with the highest level of innovation in the world and a country that boasts winners in various international competitions out of all proportion to our size.  I thank you and am very pleased to see you.  May we all have a great year.”
