Prime Minister Ariel Sharon’s Address To the Bereaved Families
You are probably listening to these words as you are heading towards the cemeteries. In a few moments you will arrive and walk through the gate again, to that plot which is so familiar, the tombstone, where you will be alone with your loved ones.
As with every year, when I address you, I again face that unbearable difficulty; What can I say to try to ease the pain, when I know that there is no cure for the pain. What can I say to express my condolences, when I know that there are no words of comfort.
In a few minutes, I will also be leaving for Mount Herzl – to the commemoration ceremony. On my way I will again visit friends, commanders and comrades who are no longer with us. I see them today as clearly as they were on the day they fell. I remember the last conversation with each one, the briefing before the operation, the words of encouragement before battle. I see them before my eyes in every debate, in every decision.
Today – as you head towards the cemetery, I hope to accompany you with two pledges: to keep defending our tiny piece of land with all our might and to make every effort to bring peace as quickly as possible to this land.
I extend a warm handshake to you and pray that you will know no more sorrow.
