PM Olmert Settles Controversy between Ministries Over Support Payments for the Elderly

Prime Minister Ehud Olmert summoned Finance Minister Ronnie Bar-On, Social Welfare and Social Services Minister Yitzhak Herzog, Health Minister Yaacov Ben-Yizri and Pensioners Affairs Minister Rafi Eitan to an urgent meeting in order to discuss the controversy between them regarding support payment supplements for the elderly.  The Directors-General of the aforementioned ministries, and of the National Insurance Institute, also participated in the discussion.
 
Prime Minister Olmert instructed that amendments to the 4.11.07 Government decision, in accordance with the compromise outlined by Prime Minister's Office Director-General Ra'anan Dinur, be submitted to this Sunday's (13.1.08) Cabinet meeting.
 
National Economics Council Chairman Prof. Manuel Trajtenberg has been instructed to lead a public and Government discussion on the issue of elderly support payment targets.  He has been asked to report on this issue to the Ministerial Social Welfare and Social Services Committee, chaired by Minister Herzog.
