Upon being notified of the passing of Israel's 13th Chief-of-Staff, Lt.-Gen. (res.) Dan Shomron, Prime Minister Ehud Olmert issued the following eulogy:
"It is with deep sorrow that I have heard about the passing of a fighter, commander and human being. Dan Shomron was a courageous fighter who engraved his fighting spirit on the IDF in operations which rank among its most daring. His death is a loss to Israeli society. For many years, he commanded the IDF's operational and elite units, winning appreciation, honor and personal warmth in all his duties.
Dan, born on Kibbutz Ashdot Ya'akov, embodied the values of love of the land, social obligation, and modesty – both publicly and personally – that were a symbol and example for many in the State of Israel. His full story has yet to be told.
On behalf of the Government of Israel, I convey condolences to the Shomron family, and to his friends and loved ones. May his memory be blessed."
