With Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's departure on a diplomatic visit to Japan, we have decided – for the first time – to post a blog on the Prime Minister's Office website. The blog, written by personnel from the Prime Minister's Bureau, will deal with the goals and objectives that we have set for the trip and with the meetings that Prime Minister Olmert will hold during his visit. The goal is allow those surfing the website to learn directly about the course of the visit and to obtain regular updates about its developments. For our part, this is another tool to increase the transparency of the Prime Minister's activities in general and to reveal some of his wide-ranging diplomatic work. Upon the conclusion of the visit, as well as during its course, we would be pleased to receive comments about the blog and its contents. |

“The visit to Japan is an exceptional experience in Israeli terms. Israelis more strongly identify with, and recognize, American and European culture. The visit to Japan exposes one to a completely different culture. At first glance, Tokyo seems like Manhattan. At first glance, there are almost no characteristics identified with Japan’s long and glorious traditions. The skyscrapers darken the magnificent, but modest and relatively small, shrines. Even the individual is not seen in the immensity of this great and special city. |

“Today the second day of Prime Minister Ehud Olmert’s visit to Japan, was very busy. The Prime Minister held various talks and meetings for 13 hours in an attempt to strengthen and advance bilateral economic relations. It seems that bilateral economic relations have not reached their potential, with reciprocal trade being lower than one might expect, despite the two countries’ common interests. Israel imports approximately $2 billion worth of goods per annum (half of this is motor vehicles) and exports approximately $800 million worth of goods per annum. |

Prime Minister Ehud Olmert’s plane landed in Tokyo shortly before 12:00 today, following an approximately 12-hour flight. The landing was delayed by ten minutes so that the official welcoming ceremony could start on time. The Prime Minister was received on a red carpet lined on both sides by an honor guard. While the temperature was a mere three degrees, the welcoming ceremony itself was warm and friendly. |

Prime Minister Ehud Olmert’s trip to Japan was planned well in advance; he has accepted invitations that he received last year both from current Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda, as well as from the latter’s predecessor, Shinzo Abe. No Israeli Prime Minister has visited Japan since then Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s visit in 1997, despite the deepening of bilateral relations and Japan’s great importance as an economic superpower with global influence. |
