The National Security Council (NSC) was established in 1999, following Government Resolution #4889.
Purpose of the National Security Council:
To serve as a centralized body for, and providing information to, the Prime Minister and the Government regarding issues of national security.
Authority:
The Council derives its authority from the Government and operates in accordance with directives issued by the Prime Minister. The Council Chairman is directly answerable to the Prime Minister and also serves as National Security Adviser to the Prime Minister.
Duties:
1. Hold senior council forums for the Prime Minister and the Government regarding issues of national security.
2. Coordinate integrative assessments of processes and trends of all aspects in the field of national security.
3. Direct integrative staff operations between offices and authorities dealing with national security in order to receive their input in their fields of responsibility, and with the goal of increasing coordination and integration between them.
4. Prepare discussions for the government, ministerial committee for national security and the Prime Minister, and brief Knesset committees on these issues, in accordance with Prime Ministerial directives.
5. Advise the government on policies relating to national security.
6. Long-term planning of national security components, taking in to consideration existing planning factor in State offices and bodies dealing with national security.
7. Follow-up and update regarding activities and implementation of resolutions regarding national security.
8. Maintain coordination and cooperation contacts with parallel national security authorities in selected countries, in coordination with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and its delegates around the world, in accordance with accepted norms.
